CUCKOO FLOWERS AND CUCKOOS!
The delicate pale pink Cuckoo Flower, also known as Lady’s Smock (Cardamine pratensis), is now in bloom. It grows in damp places – along ditches, on the flood plain meadows and on the riverbank. Its common name comes from the time when it is in flower – mid to late April – when the cuckoo returns from its winter stay in Africa.
This patch of Cuckoo Flower is along the bridleway to Houghton Mill from Hemingford Abbots. And the cuckoo has been calling across these meadows for the last ten days. Spring has arrived! The more close-up picture is from Wilhorn Meadow in St Ives. Thank you Bridget for this Sighting.
